Take a Service Vacation

Come Serve with Us: Go on the vacation of a lifetime by yourself, with your friends, or with your family!  Come serve with us in The Gambia and return home transformed forever!

Getting out of your comfort zone and immersing yourself in a different culture offers you experiences that change the way you see yourself and the world.  Starfish provides individuals, groups, and families an opportunity to help 100 female Gambian students strengthen their English conversation skills. Volunteers can also develop and teach a subject or special skill they are passionate about such as photography, bead-making, music and drama, and martial arts.  In addition to serving as teachers or teaching assistances, volunteers are encouraged to develop and implement a service-learning project.  Previous volunteers have done projects with the national School for the Blind, taught local women beadwork, and held musical performances at an orphanage.

Opportunities to participate in classes that focus on Multicultural Issues and Cross-cultural Communication will be offered.  Volunteers will also engage in various interactive cultural activities to enhance their learning about and involvement in Gambian life and culture.  Trips and workshops will help them explore aspects of Gambian culture beyond just life in the village.  These will include visits to historical sites, cultural centers, markets, government offices, and animal reserves.  These activities will help the participants further solidify what they are learning in class and experiencing in daily life.
