Year Long Program Launched!

For the first time, Starfish International launches a year long program in February, 2012. Current Volunteer, Jennifer Greenman, arrived in The Gambia February 3rd, and will stay for two months. Jennifer is interested in resiliency, and will work to help the girls tell their stories through weekly interviews and discussion sessions. Jennifer received her Master's in Social Work at Columbia University. She now works as a Social Worker at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center working with cancer patients and their family members. She also has school social work experience. After only several days in The Gambia, Jennifer already feels at home. She will be blogging her experience, so please keep checking in.

Nyima Sarr is the Youth Director/Intern for Starfish International. She wants the program to grow and develop to the point where all of the girls can be independent and able to take care of themselves in any situation in life with dignity, integrity and grace. Nyima is a University Of The Gambia first year Law student. She has been the Youth Director for four years and an Intern for a year. Nyima has been helping the girls with planning their service projects, coordinating peer tutoring programs, and looking out for their wellbeing. Nyima will now be guiding the Public Relations Group and taking them to different places in The Gambia to recruit Starfish Allies.

Nyuma Njie is a current Master's student at the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University, and is studying Information Management. She has an interest in working on projects focused on development with children, women, education and technology. Nyuma has a strong passion for development in Africa, and has previously worked with International Organization for Migration in Accra, Ghana, in the field of Counter Trafficking of Children. She would love to continue in a career of development.  Nyima looks forward to working with Starfish International as a Social Media Intern.  She will be working on social media projects, community service projects, and fundraising activities.
