Starfish Girl of the Week

Fatou Faburay is a Starfish graduate who is currently completing her second year in medical school.  On weekday evenings, she works in the Starfish Library.  Fatou is a product of what empowering girls through education can accomplish.

Fatou was born in Lamin and continues to live there with her parents and siblings.  Fortunately, Fatou's parents encouraged all of their children to attend and succeed in school.  Although Fatou has always been strong academically, she was introverted and feared public speaking.  She had dreams of continuing her education and becoming a doctor, but was not sure of her future.

Jen's First Blog

After being in the Gambia for only a week, I feel comfortable, welcome, and at home.  I have been most overwhelmed by the kindness of the people here.

Year Long Program Launched!

For the first time, Starfish International launches a year long program in February, 2012. Current Volunteer, Jennifer Greenman, arrived in The Gambia February 3rd, and will stay for two months. Jennifer is interested in resiliency, and will work to help the girls tell their stories through weekly interviews and discussion sessions. Jennifer received her Master's in Social Work at Columbia University.
